My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Guy’s a friend, so I should state this up front, but for me he’s the single most original, creative left-winger in Australia. Rundle consistently comes up with interesting takes on things, even if I don’t always agree with them. This book, though, is a return to his comedy heritage, and delightful it is at that. Fifty portraits – some better than others, it’s true – of people who stuffed up Australia. It’s the surprising, iconoclastic ones that I liked the most: Bob Brown, Christos Tsiolkas, Cate Blanchett. It’s easy enough to take aim at Tony Abbott or Bolt, but those ones are hilarious and to-the-point. Perhaps the one on David Marr is the most politically astute though, and it is here that Rundle’s book attains a level of seriousness too. There more than just edge to these portraits. Definitely fun but with moments of underlying seriousness too. A perfect gift, methinks.
