Finding Unwrapped Sky

I’ve written about the process of writing (and inspiration behind) Unwrapped Sky. You can read it over on Tor UK’s site.

    Hi there!

First of all, I want you to know how much I loved your book. The excellent worldbuilding, the characters philosophizing about their position in life, their self-reflection and their overall “grayness” was very well made. Consider me a fan that will follow your works diligently.

That said, Tor did you a great disfavour with their editing or rather: the lack of it.

    They obviously couldn’t decide whether to name the sunken city Caeli-Enas, Caeli-Enis or (in one case) Caeli-Enad (here’s a few examples: loc. 5408 / 5411 / 5820).
We are left with jumbled sentences where, clearly the sentence has been rearranged but the remains of the previous version are still partially around and screw up the whole meaning. Unfortunately, I can’t provide an example – I seem to haven’t saved the note I took whilst reading.

This all makes for a rather jarring read where you perk up because you’re really, really sure this time, that it was Caeli-Enis … only, it wasn’t. The same goes for 2.) it just tears you out of your submersion and –after sorting the jumbled sentence- you take a while to get back in again.

Can you not clap somebody at Tor on their ears and have them do better?

    Please?

Hi. Thanks for your feedback and I’m glad you enjoyed the book. Sorry you found problems with the copy-editing. Unfortunately when I went through the final copy I had a serious disc problem in my neck and was on painkillers, so I missed those errors. Hopefully they’ll be corrected next time. My book The Stars Askew – a sequel – should be out about this time next year. And hopefully I won’t be on painkillers this time around. Of course there are proofreaders there too, who should have picked that stuff up. So, apologies again.

By the way, if you do find any of those errors, do send them through and I’ll keep them for next time – if the book goes into a second run.

    Hi again!

I’m sorry to read you being on painkillers at that time, I hope you are well again. Also, there’s no need to apologise – mistakes happen; however, I would have expected the editor(s) to pick up on such inconsistencies.

    1.) Caeli-Enis / Caeli-Enas

Assuming Caeli-Enis is the error, I’ll give you location/page (Kindle edition) – not sure whether Kindle page numbers match paper-book page numbers:
    3024/208
    3546/243
    5014/346
    5821/402

    2.) Jumbled Sentences

Seeing that I failed to save my note on the Kindle, this will require a complete re-read. Will do. Allow me a couple of weeks for that, please.

Also, there was a not so favourable review of Unwrapped Sky on tumblr which I couldn’t resist commenting on here: http://jesters-armed.tumblr.com/post/84211176503. At least my handful of followers “knows” now that this is no mediocre book.

Thanks for the comment on the poor review. That’s really nice of you. There are a few negative reviews out there, but also some very good ones too. I guess that’s just how it goes.

Thanks for the notes on the typos etc above. I’ll keep those and if there’s a second print run (fingers crossed!) we’ll hopefully change them! It’s quite disappointing, of course.

And again, so glad you liked the book!
